Persistent Cough In Children

Introduction:

Persistent cough in children can be a source of concern for parents and caregivers. While coughing is a natural reflex that helps clear the airways, a cough that lingers for weeks may indicate an underlying issue that needs attention. In some cases, consulting with an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) doctor becomes necessary to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Let’s delve deeper into what causes persistent cough in children and why seeing an ENT doctor might be crucial.

What is a Persistent Cough?

A persistent cough is one that lasts for more than a few weeks, often persisting despite various treatments or remedies. It can be dry or productive (producing mucus or phlegm), and it may occur during the day, at night, or both. While occasional coughing is normal and usually not a cause for concern, persistent coughing can disrupt a child’s daily activities, disturb their sleep, and affect their overall well-being.

Common Causes of Persistent Cough in Children:

1. **Respiratory Infections**: Viral or bacterial infections such as the common cold, flu, bronchitis, or pneumonia can lead to a persistent cough.

2. **Asthma**: Children with asthma often experience persistent coughing, especially at night or during physical activity.

3. **Allergies**: Allergic reactions to pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or certain foods can trigger chronic coughing.

4. **Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)**: Stomach acid backing up into the esophagus can irritate the throat and cause a persistent cough, especially after eating or lying down.

5. **Sinusitis**: Inflammation of the sinuses due to viral, bacterial, or fungal infections can lead to postnasal drip and persistent coughing.

6. **Environmental Factors**: Exposure to smoke, air pollution, or other environmental irritants can lead to chronic coughing.

7. **Postnasal Drip**: Excess mucus dripping down the back of the throat due to allergies or sinus infections can cause a persistent cough.

8. **Foreign Object**: In rare cases, a foreign object lodged in the airway may lead to persistent coughing.

Why See an ENT Doctor?

While pediatricians can often diagnose and treat common causes of cough in children, there are instances where a consultation with an ENT doctor becomes necessary:

1. **Recurrent or Chronic Cough**: If your child’s cough persists despite standard treatments or recurs frequently, an ENT doctor can perform a comprehensive evaluation to identify underlying issues.

2. **Suspected Airway Abnormalities**: Conditions such as chronic bronchitis, vocal cord dysfunction, or anatomical abnormalities in the throat or airways may require specialized evaluation by an ENT specialist.

3. **Persistent Hoarseness or Voice Changes**: If your child experiences persistent hoarseness or voice changes along with coughing, an ENT doctor can assess for possible vocal cord issues or other vocal pathologies.

4. **Difficulty Swallowing**: Chronic coughing accompanied by difficulty swallowing or throat pain may indicate problems with the throat or esophagus that an ENT doctor can evaluate.

5. **Persistent Ear Infections**: Children with recurrent ear infections may develop a persistent cough due to fluid buildup or related complications, necessitating assessment by an ENT specialist.

Persistent cough in children can have various underlying causes, ranging from common respiratory infections to more complex issues requiring specialized care. While many cases of coughing resolve on their own or with simple treatments, persistent or recurrent coughing warrants attention from healthcare professionals. Consulting with an ENT doctor can help ensure a thorough evaluation, accurate diagnosis, and appropriate management of your child’s coughing symptoms, promoting their overall health and well-being. If your child is experiencing persistent coughing or related symptoms, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice and consider scheduling an appointment with an ENT specialist.

I consult Dr Pang for various issues - from nose bleed to chronic hives to ear block. He is always very thorough in his work. Dr Pang is very easy to talk to, and always tries to understand not just your condition, but your medical history and the environment you live and work in. He asked thorough questions about my medical and lifestyle history, carried out allergen tests to narrow down possible causes and gave very detailed advice on how to manage my hives condition. Appointment times are also adhered to (give and take 10-15min allowance which I find totally acceptable). Dr Pang also shares treatment options openly but always left it to my own discretion to pick the one I am most comfortable with. I also appreciate his staff for always being friendly and patient, and giving clear instructions when I had tests to take. It’s hard to find a clinic these days where you could have a comfortable and relaxed visit so I am glad that I found them.

I’ve had a very good experience at Dr Pang’s clinic. I had concerns around sleep apnea and Dr Pang identified that I was suffering from a lot of different allergies and food sensitivities. Now I’m getting treated for some of these allergies and it has improved my life quality a lot which I’m so grateful for. Him and his team of nurses are also super friendly and down to earth so it’s always a nice experience visiting the clinic as well! Highly recommended.

First visit to Dr Pang was almost 10 years ago where he treated my extremely severe allergic rhinitis. My allergies were so bad that I would get attacks triggered every single day in normal environments. Ever since the treatment I have probably only experienced allergy attacks less than 5 times in the past 10 years, and those times I can pinpoint were in dusty conditions. Thank you Dr Pang for changing my life for the better!! Will always be grateful to you and your clinic :)

Thank you Dr Pang Yoke Teen for helping me to cope with my allergies! I went to Dr Pang after suffering from severe allergies for several years. My nose congestion and eye irritation would completely ruin my quality of life. At the first consultation Dr Pang was able to diagnose the problem and prescribed the necessary medication. I started to feel better after taking the medication for just a couple of days. I have been under Dr Pang’s care for more than 6 months now and I have almost forgotten what it is to have an allergy! A special mention for Sheila and the other staff who also make the experience to the clinic an easy and comfortable one - thank you too!

I’ve had a sensitive nose and sinus issues since childhood. After consulting Dr Pang, I went for a surgery and on a course of immunotherapy. It just works — I almost never get runny / blocked nose anymore unless I’m actually sick!
